National Youth Week 2006 comes to an end!

Redcliffe held an incredible National Youth Week for 2006!

Marg and Emma from the Redcliffe Cultural Centre, and Jarryd and Emily from the Youth Space, began planning and designing the event back in December of 2005, and were joined along the way by Chris from the Catalyst Youth Arts Organisation, Alex from the Redcliffe Cultural Centre, and a host of volunteers who very generously gave of their time to help us!

We all thought that four months of planning and organisation would be too much, but it turned out to be the exact right amount of time we needed. We were busy right up to the very day of the launch on April 1st. The logistics of organising a continuous eight day event were mind boggling, particularly when our building was under construction for 98% of that time and we had no idea if it would be finished by the expected date, but we managed it with a considerable amount of style and flare... and a lot of caffeine!

The launch of the second stage of the Youth Space kicked off the entire week, and saw a host of visitors and members of the community decend upon the Space to enjoy a moment that had been three years in the making. The completion of the Redcliffe Area Youth Space. For three years the Youth Space had been, quite literally, only half a building. The Space was originally designed to form a "V" shape facing out onto the natural amphitheatre that faces the centre, consisting of a west and east wing. Unfortunately the original design had been too expensive at the time to be completed during the original construction, so the construction was divided up into stages. Stage one, and the recently completely stage two. The money situation changed in 2005 thanks to a bi-election and a promise from Premier Peter Beatie. That promise, a lot of negotiation by our Management Committee, and a very healthy injection of funds from the Redcliffe City Council, saw the Youth Space get completed. The West Wing was finished off, and the East Wing was constructed giving us new training rooms and new toilets!

For our launch, the staff and Management Committee of the Youth Space were joined by the Honourable Mr Dean Wells (Official Representative for the Premier), Mr Terry Rogers (the state member for Redcliffe), His Worshop Mayor Allan Sutherland (the Mayor of Redcliffe), and a few of our local Councillors. Joining the political dignatories were members of other local Youth and Community organisations, a great turn out of young people, and members of the general public. His Worship, Mayor Allan Sutherland, and the Honourable Mr Dean Wells officially opened the new Youth Space with the unveiling of a commerative plaque, and then all the dignataries and anyone else interested received a tour of the new facility by the Chair of the Youth Space Management Committee, Kelly, and the Youth Space Coordinator, Jarryd. When all of the official business was done, the real fun began!

At 5pm the Youth Space exploded with music from local band "The Modular", followed by fellow local artists"Art of Abduction" and "Re-Invention". These three amazing bands pumped the audience into action, priming them for our two headliner acts, "Elijah" and "Fem Inc".

All five bands were extraordinary, and the night went off without a hitch!

"Fem Inc", an all female band from Brisbane, kindly allowed us to set off a few cold fireworks toward the end of their act, and the Redcliffe Area Youth Space lit up the sky and our massive outdoor stage with a blaze of light. Photo's of the night can be found below. Scroll on down if you want to take a peek! A shot showing some of the cold fireworks can be found on the front page.

The next day, April 2nd, the Redcliffe Cultural Centre hosted "FRIGHT NIGHT", which was three scary movies giving everyone a reason to jump and throw lollies all over the place. Horror flick "CABIN FEVER" kicked the night off with a lesson in why camping can be hazordous to your health. The psychological horror thriller "SAW" followed and chilled everyone to the bone. The new version of the "AMITTYVILLE HORROR" finished the night off with the message - look carefully into the history of any house you're thinking of buying!

Monday was all about getting educated on one of the most virulent of all modern day illnesses, Hepatitis C. The talk took place in the evening at the Youth Space and was hosted by the Hepatitis Council of Queensland. The turn out was good, the topic serious, and the information invaluable. Monday also saw the kick off of our Youth Arts Exhibition at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre.

Tuesday saw the theme of Hep C continued with a day long workshop on the topic. The workshop, again hosted by the Hep C Council, kicked off at 8:30am and went until 4:30pm. It was an information day that was well attended and saw every participant get a lot out of the discussions and information presented.

Wednesday was dedicated to the drama queens (and kings) on the peninsula. Xpressions Drama hosted a theatre sports workshop at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre and gave the area's budding thespians a reason to "ham it up".

Thursday was a DJ workshop at the Youth Space thanks to Integrated Family and Youth Services. Working in my office just down the corridor I could hear the odd tune being created, and it was fun to listen to the beats being produced by our enthusiastic DJ's to be!

Friday was the first of what will become our annual Youth Film Festival. RYFF (Redcliffe Youth Film Festival) was an experiment to see if there was interest in the local community for short films produced by young people. We were pleasantly surprised to see that there was, and that there is a budding movement of young film-makers on the peninsula eager to share their talent. The Festival was hosted at the Youth Space, and the entries were judged by local young people and Youth Space staff and volunteers. The night went for approximately an hour and a half, and in that time 12 short films were shown. The entries ranged from the funny to the serious, and from the sublime to the strange and unusual! It was a good night filled with laughter and a lot of applause. The first prize in the festival went to the Webber Brothers from Grace Lutheran College for their film "Elisha and the Two She-Bears".

Saturday saw the climax to Redcliffe's National Youth Week 2006 Celebrations with SURGE, our skate/bike/blade competition. The day went off in a big way. Our crowds maxed at 600 people, which was amazing! We'd been expecting between 100 and 150, and were thrilled and a little overawed at the numbers that turned up. Throughout the four and a half hours the comp ran, the audience never dropped below around 300 people. Along with the incredibly talented bladers, bikers and skaters who turned up, we had NOVA do an hour long live radio broadcast from the event, Red Bull giving away free drinks, sumo-wrestling, a jumping castle for the kids, local stalls, and some great music by NUZU Entertainment, which was made possible thanks to Shaggy's PA Hire.

Following SURGE at 7pm was a massive Dance Party at the Redcliffe Police Citizens Youth Club. The night was run by NUZU Entertainment, and featured RANDOM, the local boys who made it big by winning Channel 10's the "X-Factor" last year (2005).

All in all, Redcliffe's Youth Week 2006 was a phenomenal success!

ROCKOUT:
In March of 2005 the Redcliffe Area Youth Space in conjunction with local indie band "Pacemaker" hosted the "Redcliffe Rockout" Battle of the Bands at "The Shed" in Clontarf. The night was an incredible success, and saw "The Shed" reach it's capacity over the duration of the night.

The event was designed and organised by the Redcliffe Area Youth Space's "Get in Tune 2" team, and was aimed at showcasing up and coming young bands from the peninsula and surrounding areas.

The winner of the Battle of the Bands was local band "Choking Cats", who have won the honour of being the headliner act for our next major event, "Get Amped", which is a massive music industry conference and live band night!

Congratulations to "Choking Cats", and a huge thanks to "Pacemaker" who have been strong supporters of the Youth Space over the last year!

JAMMIN' IN THE PARK:
Back in 2005 we weren't letting things slip on by either, and had quite a few high quality, crowd pleasing music concerts and family oriented events.

In October, November and December of 2005 the Redcliffe Area Youth Space and our "Get in Tune 1" team designed and hosted a series of free outdoor music showcase concerts at the Humpybong Park Sound Shell. All three were a great success, and featured a variety of local bands and muscians, local stall holders, and fun games and activities for the whole family.

Jammin' 1, held on the 23rd of October, featured the "Bobkats", "Glasshouse", "Rong Regime", and "Ozalians".

Jammin' 2, held on the 13th of November, featured "Shifter", "The Blood Poets", "Re-Invention", and "Pacemaker".

Jammin' 3, held on the 11th of December, featured "Anton Goodchild", "Pacemaker", "Cavendish", "In Rush", and a big headlining band from Brisbane - "Elephant Mojo", who kicked off their Australian Tour by doing our show... for FREE!

Below are a few photo's of the event to give you an idea of what we got up to!
